Environmental Protection

Barely 20 years ago, the volumes of pollutants emitted by our power plants were incomparably higher. Significant reductions in the emissions of dust and chemical compounds have been achieved as a result of a large-scale programme of comprehensive modernization. The programme embraces modern technological solutions and is geared towards meeting ever more stringent environmental requirements.

On 22 December 2003, we obtained an ISO 14001:1996 environmental certificate.

Our staff have high environmental awareness. This is one more reason why we have been able to significantly limit adverse impacts of the company on the environment, as confirmed by one of the most prestigious awards we have received:

The Pantheon of Polish Ecology prize conferred under the auspices of the Environment Minister and the Director of the Polish Centre for Testing and Certification.

As a result of administrative and legal efforts to secure documents required under the Polish legislation and under European Union directives on environmental protection, all of our plants have obtained IPPC permits to produce electricity and heat.

Our ongoing environmental efforts include:

  • continuous air monitoring, which allows us to quickly respond to emergencies
  • monitoring the surface water of the Konin lakes used in the open cooling system of the Pątnów and Konin power plants, supported by a number of research programmes carried out in collaboration with such institutions as the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management in Poznań and Inland Fisheries Institute in Olsztyn
  • systematic reclamation of degraded land by restoring its forest, recreational or agricultural uses through the backfilling of former open-pit mines with ash from the power stations.
