Deputy Prime Minister at the Konin Power Plant

On June 14, this year, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Development – Mrs Jadwiga Emilewicz – came to the Konin Power Plant belonging to the ZE PAK SA Capital Group. The Deputy Prime Minister met with the acting President of ZE PAK SA Management Board. In the meeting, the development plans and objectives of ZE PAK SA related to new investments as well as the Company's participation in the broadly understood energy transition of the Eastern Greater Poland region were presented.

Among other issues, the modernization of the existing coal system at the Konin Power Plant and creating an additional 50 MW generating unit based on it, adapted for biomass combustion, were the subjects of the talks. Thus, the installed capacity of the power plant will reach 100 MW. The power plant in Konin will become the first facility in our country where the coal-fired boiler will be converted into a biomass boiler producing electricity and heat for the city of Konin.

Potential plans for the use of the reclaimed post-mining areas as locations for photovoltaic wind farms were also discussed. The issue of expanding the technology chain of ZE PAK SA with hydrogen production applying the electrolysis process based on renewable energy sources was raised too.

The President also informed the Deputy Prime Minister about the involvement of ZE PAK SA in activities related to the Eastern Greater Poland region with the mechanism of the Just Transition Fund. Owing to the cooperation with Konin and province authorities, as well as local government and non-governmental organizations, Konin has become one of three post-mining regions in Poland, which are to receive funds under the Just Transition Fund.

For her part, the Deputy Prime Minister mentioned about new opportunities of using the EU Recovery Fund, whose value is over EUR 60 billion. Obtaining this money is a huge challenge. It will require the cooperation of the government, representatives of local governments, and social environments to identify specific projects that will be on the map of the beneficiaries of the EU Recovery Fund.

The meeting gave impetus to new areas of cooperation. These include the round table associated with the transition of Eastern Greater Poland, which is to be a permanent element of Eastern Greater Poland's strategic investments, implemented by the government in cooperation with local governments and local entrepreneurs.
